England international goalkeeper Scott Carson feels he was never given a proper opportunity at Liverpool. Now 23, he moved to Anfield from Leeds United in January 2005, as a teenager.

However, he played just four times in the Premier League for the Reds and was then sent out on season-long loans, first to Charlton Athletic and then to Aston Villa.

This summer he left Liverpool for West Bromwich Albion in a £3.25 million deal - and he has been in good form for the Baggies this season.

He told the Mirror: “It would be great for me to have the game of my life at Liverpool. I never really got a chance to show what I can do there.

“I was there three years and I don’t think I was ever going to get a crack at being number one. I was behind Jerzy Dudek and then Pepe Reina came in.

“That’s when I thought I’d best move on and look for a club where I could settle.

“I was only young when I joined Liverpool and the manager probably never considered me because of my lack of experience.

“They probably would have liked me to sit on the bench for a couple of years and challenge Reina. But I’m not one for just sitting on the bench and picking up my money.

“I’d rather do everything I can to get out on the pitch on a Saturday.”

With Albion having slipped to 19th in the table after taking only one point from the last 12 on offer, and Liverpool joint top with Chelsea, Tony Mowbray’s side could certainly do with a man-of-the-match performance between the posts today from Carson…
