Bremen back in the groove

Werder Bremen scored their first win in seven competitive games with a 5-1 thrashing of Hertha BSC Berlin.

A near sell-out crowd in the Weserstadion saw the game pretty much decided in the first half. An own-goal from Gojko Kacar put the home side in front on 14 minutes and six minutes later Diego made it 2-0 with a spectacular sideways scissors kick.

Markus Rosenberg tapped in from close range in the 42nd minute to send Werder in three-up at the break following a first 45 which had been notable above all for the fact that Bremen appeared to have rediscovered their fighting spirit. The return of Diego in the playmaker role also played no small role in the Hanseatics' revitalised performance.

A couple more for good measure

Werder bagged a fourth through Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro on the hour mark before eventually easing off the pace somewhat.

Hertha midfielder Cicero headed a consolation effort for the guests in the 68th minute, but they were for the most part a shadow of the side which has otherwise been so strong on the road this season.

Pizarro underscored the difference between the two sides on the day by making it 5-1 for Bremen in the 85th minute.
