Manchester United captain and veteran right back Gary Neville has said he is happy to maintain a position on the bench while he regains full match fitness.
The 33-year old also revealed that a seven substitute bench eases squad tension because even if you don’t receive playing time, you can still feel part of the game.
“It is much better to have seven substitutes,” Neville is quoted by Fox Sports as saying. “Nowadays clubs can have up to 22 players in their squads with most of them travelling to games but up until this season, six of them would not even make the bench.”
“At least if you are on the bench you feel part of it and there is a chance you might get on. That is the worst thing about being out injured. You feel like you are not contributing.”
“I am not a great sub,” he explained. I am hardly going to come on and change a game. But it is great to be back travelling with the lads and feeling part of it again.”
During Neville’s prolonged absence Manchester United claimed a memorable double, with Wes Brown slotting in and performing solidly in the right back berth. Brazilian Rafael has also added further competition for the role with some energetic displays.
