Leverkusen win on the road

Bayer Leverkusen travelled hopefully and successfully to secure their slot among the early season leaders.

For hosts Bochum, their first home defeat of the season put them close to the danger zone in the lower rungs of the table.

The 3:2 (2:0) result for Bruno Labbadia's Leverkusen was their fifth win in six games.

Sharp in attack

Leverkusen were sharp in attack especially in the first half. Arturo Vidal put them ahead in the 6th minute after a goalmouth scramble, but Brazilian Renato Augusto's strike into the corner of the goal after a fast counter attack was worth the ticket price.

Striker Patrick Helmes (61.) slotted home his seventh of the season to leave Bochum trailing 0:3. But the home side gave their fans some hope with late goals from Stanislav Sestak (79.) and Mimoun Azaouagh (81.). Intead of a third goal, a bad foul by Anthar Yahia (84.) earned a red card.

Leverkusen touch wood

In the first half, Leverkusen were lucky not to concede a goal. First keeper Rene Adler gloved a shot from VfL striker Sinan Kaloglu on to the post. Christoph Dabrowski (32.) shot high from only 5 metres out and Shinji Ono twice missed the goal from close range. Adler was in action again with a reflex save from a shot by former team mate Paul Freier.

There was plenty of effort from Bochum after the interval, but they rarely looked dangerous.
