Hamburger SV are back on top of the Bundesliga, thanks to a 1-0 (1-0) home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Mladen Petric nabbed what would prove to be the matchwinner in the 12th minute for a home side playing well below their best. Gladbach, however, rarely looked like finding a way back into the contest themselves as they went down to their third league defeat in a row.
Early opener
Borussia coach Jos Luhukay made six changes to the side that lost to Cottbus in the cup in midweek, sending out a team with a distinctly defensive look to it. They soon found themselves behind, however, Petric heading home a free-kick with the aid of an involuntary assist from Jean-Sabastian Jaures.
The visitors seemed unable to respond in any positive fashion to that setback, and with HSV out of sorts there was little for fans of either side to cheer from that point on.
Marin hits the bar
Hamburg eased off at the start of the second half, and were nearly punished for it in the 71st minute when substitute Marko Marin skimmed the bar for Gladbach just two minutes after coming on.
With quarter of an hour to go, Jonathan Pitroipa passed up the chance to make the result safe for HSV, firing a weak effort at guest keeper Christofer Heimeroth when clean through. Borussia had a last-gasp opportunity to equalise in the 90th minute, but Rob Friend was unable to make the most of it.
