The 22-year-old Frenchman was signed in pre-season from Paris St Germain for £4m, and is delighted at way things are shaping up, both personally and in terms of his new team.

“Everything’s great, I’m discovering another culture, another approach of football that suits me pretty well,” Digard was quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

“Without underestimating the French league, that’s a different world, but not anybody would like it.

“I’m going to keep on working in order to impose myself in this team.

“This summer I had other offers and I needed to leave PSG. It’s not about competition,” he told football365.fr.

“I just needed to move to England for many reasons and it suits me better.

“Tactically, the Premier League is not as clean as the French one but it’s much more intense because you never have a moment to rest. That’s the high level.

“I’m settling into the squad pretty well, it’s a solid and homogeneous group with many different nationalities but there’re no clans, as everybody is part of the same plan.”

Digard went on to single out some of his team-mates for special praise.

“We’re not the most media exposed team but there are very good players anyway, such as Brazilian striker Afonso Alves, who is very consistent and comfortable in front of the goal,” he added.

“There is also the Turkish Tuncay Sanli, who is technically remarkable. Besides, his defensive work is tremendous.

“Frenchman Jeremie Aliadiere brings his quickness behind the attack.

“There’s an England international, Stewart Downing, who is quick with exceptional shooting abilities, and there are also plenty of other good players.”
