The Premier League and the FA have long condoned campaigns such as ‘kick racism out of football’, and to a large extent, they have been a success. So when a disparaging comment about race is brought into the British spotlight it is treated with scorn.
Luis Aragones felt the wrath of it, with calls for his resignation following his comments to Jose Antonio Reyes about Thierry Henry in a Spanish training camp.
Now Sergei Rebrovis in the dock for his assessment of north London life. He is alleged to have warned new Spurs signing Roman Pavyluchenko: “A lot of dark-skinned people live there. So naturally the crime rate is higher than anywhere else.
“It’s not nice to be a robbery victim. So I suggest that Roman doesn’t walk but drives around that area.”
A spokesman for Tottenham told the Evening Standard: “These comments have been made by a player who is no longer with the club. We do not tolerate discrimination of any sort at the club, on or off the pitch.”
“Tottenham has been at the heart of the local community for 126 years, and our passion on the pitch is shared with the passion we have for the borough.”
