Former Flamingo star for a dozen years and current Fenerbahçe manager Zico, 55, is flattered to be linked with the vacant head coach position at Newcastle United.

He is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: “The Newcastle job is one that I would be very interested in taking. It would be a privilege and an honour… I’ve always wanted to experience the Premier League as I believe I could enjoy much success coaching in England.”
##3## Zico encourages a free-flowing attacking mentality into his teams which would be welcomed by the Geordie support, but a stumbling block to his appointment may be that he is not a Geordie himself. Steve Bruce is also a reported target of Mike Ashley’s and was born just outside of Newcastle in Corbridge.

Kevin Keegan resigned as the manager of the Magpies last week and issued a statement that said: “…a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want,” alluding to the role Dennis Wise plays at the club and how it undermines his authority as manager. This however, would not be an issue for Zico, who said:

“I am used to working alongside technical directors so this isn’t an issue for me. It’s normal for me to work in those conditions.”
