Arsenal finished third domestically last season, ensuring them a spot in the Champions League qualifiers; they overcame Dutch side FC Twente to achieve a place in the tournament proper alongside Porto, Dynamo Kyiv and Fenerbahce.

Meanwhile, an underwhelming AC Milan could only manage to finish fifth in Serie A, losing out on a Champions League place to Fiorentina, Juventus, Roma and Internazionale.

However, Flamini insists that the prospect of playing his continental football in Europe’s second tier does not bother him, and that he is happy with the choice he has made.

He told the press: “I’m happy with the choice I’ve made and I don’t regret deciding to join AC Milan before knowing the results of the Serie A last season. We can always win the Uefa Cup.”

Flamini is one of a number of recently departed Arsenal midfielders, with Lassana Diarra, Gilberto Silva and Aliaksandr Hleb all departing the club since the start of the year, leaving Arsene Wenger with a dearth of personnel at his disposal.

The Gunners are thought to be weighing up a move for Stephen Appiah, the Ghana captain, and Flamini is optimistic about his former team-mate’s continental chances this term.

The 24-year-old continued: “I believe Arsenal can do something good in the competition. I will support Marseille and Arsenal in the Champions League this season.”
