Newcastle United begin their Carling Cup pursuit this evening, taking on Coventry City at the Rioch Arena. Michael Owen - who has just come back from injury himself - was benched for the game against Bolton Wanderers, but Keegan was forced to play him after Obafemi Martins sustained a knock.

Shola Ameobi, Mark Viduka, and Andy Carroll are also sidelined, leaving Owen as the only fit black and white striped striker.

Keegan has oft stated he has targets lined up, and would like to recruit before the summer window closes, but reportings of an uncertain Tyneside financial future is holding the club back.

“I wish I had a stronger squad to take down there and I wish I could just rest one or two players who need it,” Keegan is quoted by the Hartlepool Mail as saying.

“I won’t be able to do that. I have just got to pick the very best team I can. We haven’t got those riches yet because of injuries,” he concluded.
