Hertha overcome opening-day jinx
The Berlin side beat Frankfurt to get their league campaign off to a winning start - for the first time in nine years.

Coach Lucien Favre's men took the honours with a well-deserved 2-0 (1-0) victory at Eintracht. Raffael (43.) and Patrick Ebert (60.) bagged the goals for the team from the capital, whose last opening-day success was a 5-2 win against Hansa Rostock back in 1999.

Guests start strongly

Hertha were the sharper of the two sides from the off, with Eintracht reserve keeper Oka Nikolov forced into a great reflex save by Raffael nine minutes in. Two minutes later, Nikolov was called into action again, saving at close range from a lively Marko Pantelic.

At the other end, central defender Marco Russ could only hit the side netting from a few metres out for the hosts in the 26th minute. But Hertha were well worth their lead when it arrived shortly before the break - Pantelic feeding Raffael with a precision pass, for the Brazilian to slot the ball home from inside the box.

Liberopoulos goes close

Frankfurt tried to force the pace after the interval, but to no great end. Their best chance came in the 57th minute, Nikos Liberopoulos heading inches over the bar.

Hertha were by now for the most part content to sit back and bide their time. The tactic paid off on the hour mark, the excellent Pantelic again the provider, with Ebert doing the honours this time to close out the contest.
