Ramsey is likely to get his first Champions League start this week against FC Twente, as an injury epidemic has claimed the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Abou Diaby, Tomas Rosicky and Samir Nasri.
The Welsh teenager has impressed immensely during pre-season, his displays in the centre of midfield more than just justifying his £5million purchase from Cardiff City.
Ramsey initially rose to prominence at Ninian Park playing on the flanks, and given the fitness issues and Rosicky and Nasri, not to mention the recent departure of Aliaksandr Hleb, it was thought the 17-year-old may be pushed wide once more.
However, Wenger has already stated that the Caerphilly-born player’s future lies in the middle of the pitch, and the Frenchman has now confessed that Ramsey perhaps lacks the technical excellence required to play on the wing.
“I don’t think he has the tricks to play wide,” he said in The Independent. “I don’t think he will because it doesn’t look to me that he has the dribbling skills.”
Wenger added: “He has a lot to learn, I believe he has the ingredients to become a good player. He has a fantastic engine, he has a good build, he has a reasonable technique although I think he has to improve that. He has to improve the defensive aspect of his game, the positioning on the pitch.”
