Coventry won the contest after Sky Blues defender Elliot Ward converted a penalty in the 48th minute and former Canaries striker Leon McKenzie wrapped up the points in the 86th minute.

Norwich manager Roeder was less than impressed with the outcome of the opening day fixture after seeing his side almost dominate at times. He said: “At times we looked like the home side and we had them on the rack.”

The Canaries? gaffer felt that some poor refereeing decision cost his side dearly, as he commented: “Unfortunately a few seconds into the second half a refereeing decision to give them a penalty changed the face of the game.”

However, he did concede that the defeat was not all down to the match officials, admitting: “I’ve counted seven or eight good chances to score and either poor technique or poor decision to have another touch instead of putting it in the back of the net has cost us.”

His opposite number, Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman, was more pleased with the result even if he felt his side could have played better.

Coleman said: “I think it was a bit of a nervous performance because of our desperation to win the game. But I’m pleased because although we didn’t create many chances, when we did we looked threatening.”
