Moratti rues Lampard failure

Lampard: Staying at Chelsea

Massimo Moratti has expressed his disappointment at failing to land Frank Lampard this summer.

The Inter Milan president has tracked the Chelsea midfielder for much of the close season, but was forced to accept defeat when it became apparent that the Blues were unwilling to part with the England international.

Despite missing out on their top transfer target, Moratti insists that the Serie A champions are in good shape heading into the new season and has ruled out any more new arrivals at Giuseppe Meazza.

The Italian chief also believes that Sulley Muntari will prove to be a more than adequate alternative to Lampard.

Acquisition

“There was a big problem with the kid, in that he belonged to Chelsea,” Moratti told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The club wouldn’t let him go and so it wouldn’t have been easy for him to come.

“Everything that potentially seemed possible turned out not to be so, and therefore it appeared to us that there was no point chasing someone for six months and we went for the alternative we had which was Muntari, who is showing himself to be a great acquisition.”

Inter have been heavily linked with a move for Porto playmaker Ricardo Quaresma, but Moratti claims a move for the Portugal international is unlikely.

“I don’t think we’ll go back into the market. I don’t think (Jose) Mourinho has any other intentions,” he said.

“We have a lot of faith in the players already here and we also hope our injured players will be back soon.”
