Shaun Wright-Phillips missed a great chance to bag the Russian Railways Cup before the Blues went down to hosts Lokomotiv Moscow on penalties.
With Chelsea’s recent woes, the 26-year-old has taken the pre-season defeat hard, perhaps hinting at current fragility in the Blues psyche. He told the club’s official website: “I had a chance and should have scored which would have killed the game, and I am upset with myself because in training I always make the keeper work. I didn’t this time.
“There were other chances but now move on and we have to get back on par with how we played in other games.”
The attack-minded player did, however, net his penalty, even if the effort was in vain.
He added: “I was nervous walking up even though it was only a friendly tournament. We practiced them the day before and I just stuck with what I had done there. I took a side-footer and hit the post, the rest I drilled into the bottom corner so I did that.
“It was disappointing and we keep losing on penalties - we’re not happy about it.”
Fight
Reports suggest that Wright-Phillips could leave the club before the end of the transfer window, with Portsmouth reportedly leading the chase to sign him.
However, he insists he won’t walk out if it’s up to him, saying: “It’s nice for the boss to say I am an important part of the squad and I’m not really a person to quit on anything either.
“I can fight for my place as long as I am here and will continue to do so.”
Chilling
Despite the perpetual runners-up tag the Blues have been labelled with, Wright-Phillips insists that there’s unity behind the scenes.
“My room is everyone’s meeting point, so we’re just chilling and having some banter. It brings us all together - we’ve been mainly playing computer games
“There are a few bad players, but I won’t mention any names! Joe Cole has been mentioned previously I think, but he has done okay.”
Wright-Phillips didn’t specify whether any players have won penalty shootouts whilst playing football games.
