Dutch giants Ajax were unable to manage a victory against Championship side Cardiff City, but Van Basten took some positives from the game. New signing Oleguer, for one, made his debut in the defence and never had any serious problems.

However, the Ajax attack was less impressive and failed to ask serious questions of the Cardiff rearguard. Serbian wunderkind Miralem Sulejmani didn’t feature, nor did Luis Suarez. Klaas Jan Huntelaar, meanwhile, only played in the first half.

“We had some good chances, but were a little bit unlucky,” said Van Basten to the official Ajax website. “In the end, we have reasons to be satisfied. The defence was very solid and the team is making good progress.”

There was bad news for Ajax in that talented playmaker Jeffrey Sarpong had to leave the pitch after only seven minutes. The soon-to-be 20-year-old midfielder is reportedly having shoulder problems.

Sarpong had the same injury last season and needed surgery to fully recover. It?s not yet known how long the youngster will spend on the sidelines.
