The two clubs simultaneously announced the transfer this evening hours after the Frenchman completed a medical at the Stadium of Light.

The 28-year-old was subject to much praise from his new manager, Roy Keane.

Keane told SAFC.com, “He’s played in the Premier League for six or seven years now and has been a consistent performer for both Tottenham and Fulham - he creates a lot for the team and can chip in with a goal or two.

“Steed is a very tricky player and is always looking for the ball and looking to open teams up. He’ll certainly offer something different to our team and will further increase competition for places in the midfield area.”

Teemu Tainio and Pascal Chimbonda have already moved to the North-East from Spurs this summer. The White Hart Lane trio are joined by ex-Bolton man El-Hadji Diouf, free agent Nick Colgan and Cork City’s David Meyler.

Malbranque, born in Belgium, represented Fulham before joining Spurs in 2006. Prior to this he played for Lyon at both youth and first team level.
