The Ghanaian international has established himself among the Premier League?s best players over the past couple of seasons with his dogged displays all over the pitch.

The departure of Claude Makelele to Paris Saint-Germain will likely see Essien battle with Jon Obi Mikel for the holding role in a star-studded midfield containing Deco, Michael Ballack and, until further notice, Frank Lampard.

Luiz Felipe Scolari is yet to finish his summer renovations, however, with AC Milan superstar Kaka reported to be right at the top of the new Blues boss? wish-list.

But Essien, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Lyon in 2005, believes the added premium on starting places will only spur him to a new level of excellence.

?When the competition gets keener it brings out the best in all the players,? the 25-year-old said in The Sun.

?Last season we signed new players and people thought I could lose my place. But I fought and stayed to maintain my position.?
