The former Atletico Madrid striker scored what proved to be the only goal of the game in the thirty-third minute as Spain defeated Germany 1-0 to secure a win in the European Championship final in Vienna on Sunday.

Last night?s triumph brought an end to 44 years of wait for international silverware for the Spanish, and Torres is now focussing on helping Liverpool to achieve success that replicates their past glories by winning the Premier League.

Torres has not always been a fans? favourite with the national team, and his goals per game ratio compares poorly with his accomplishments on Merseyside after a 33-goal debut season for the Reds.

And after the victory in Austria, Torres issued special praise for his club and their fans for helping him to achieve such a sensational first season that set him up perfectly to play a key role in Spain?s tournament success.

“I have had a wonderful first season at Anfield and the 33 goals I scored for Liverpool gave me the confidence and belief I needed for the European finals,” he said to the Liverpool Echo.

“And I would like to thank the manager Rafa Benitez and his staff because I have improved as a player thanks to them.

“But it is not just the people at the club who have helped me, it is also the supporters and the people of the city.

“From the moment I first came to Liverpool I have been made to feel welcome and that is why I am able to enjoy my football so much.

“It is incredible. The Liverpool fans have given me so much support and I know that they have even been supporting Spain and this is something I will never forget and I thank everyone for that.

Victory with Spain has now given Torres the hunger to achieve so much more at both club and international level, and the striker stated that he understands how much success means to Liverpool?s fans.

“It is my first major title but I hope it will be the first of many because I want to win many more titles with Liverpool and Spain,” he added.

“Now I am looking forward to competing for trophies with Liverpool because I know that means so much to the club and the fans.”
