Training start with new striker
More than 1,600 fans turned out for 1. FC Nürnberg's first training session of the 2008-2009 season.

Among those taking to the pitch on Sunday was the latest “Club” acquisition. 21-year-old striker Mike Frantz, signed from 1. FC Saarbrücken on a two-year contract, is one of nine new faces at FCN for the coming campaign. Frantz scored 13 times in 25 games for Saarbrücken last season.

Hoping for a swift return

Sporting director Martin Bader is making no bones about Nürnberg's target for the season: “We have a clear goal - to be playing Bundesliga football again next year!” Coach Thomas von Heesen agrees, vowing, “We want to build a team that will go up.” The 46-year-old is aware that this is very much a work in progress but says, “I'm happy the likes of Pinola and Wolf are still here, and that Raphael Schäfer has come back.” Goalkeeper Schäfer said of the welcome that greeted his return, “It's a great feeling…Nürnberg is an affair of the heart for me. The 'Club' is my club!”

Two friendlies during training camp

Nürnberg head off to their first pre-season training camp on Monday 30 June. Their first friendly is two days later, against TSV Mindelheim on Wednesday, with another test on Friday 4 July against FC Sonthofen.
