Bayer 04 Leverkusen are warming for the new season. First step: performance tests at a specialised university sports clinic in Cologne. Second step: out on to the training field. And that's where their problems have started.
New signing Patrick Helmes was one of 21 players who turned up as Bayer Leverkusen's new coach Bruno Labbadia's held his first pre-season training session. But 20 minutes into the first practice game, 24-year old Helmes limped off for treatment after turning his right ankle over during warm-up exercises. The club says an MRI scan shows he'll be out for two weeks.
Wednesday's opening session was missing some of Bayer's internationals, on dury at EURO 2008: Adler, Barnetta, Gekas and Rolfes, as well as the injured Bernd Schneider. Ghanaian Hans Sarpei is also away on international duty.
But the major disappointment for the 100 fans who showed up was the injury to Patrick Helmes.
