Four days after the end of their double-winning season, Bayern's new coach Jürgen Klinsmann firms up his backroom staff for the season ahead.
Along with assistant trainer Martin Vasquez, team manager Christian Nerlinger and scout Nick Theslof, Bayern's new head coach Jürgen Klinsmann has appointed his fitness team. In addition to Oliver Schmidtlein, who returns to the club, and Thomas Wilhelmi, who's been there for a year and a half, Darcy Norman and Marcel Martins will be brought in to ensure peak physical fitness among the club's players.
Schmidtlein to head up fitness team
Schmidtlein returns to the club after taking some time out. He was Mr Fitness for the German national team during Klinsmann's stint as national coach and recently opened his own therapy centre in Munich. He will be responsible for the needs of the Bayern players, as he was from 2002 to 2007.
Schmidtlein will this time be responsible for the whole area of physical fitness and will work closely with Klinsmann on designing individual programmes for each FCB player to improve and develop their fitness and performance levels.
Schmidtlein will be supported by Thomas Wilhelmi who has worked for Ottmar Hitzfeld for the last 18 months and knows the Bayern players really well. His main focus will be on rehab, getting players fit again after injury so that they can rejoin team training as smoothly as possible.
