Aston Villa gaffer Martin O’Neill has confirmed that four players have left Villa Park on Thursday…

Although the list of today’s departures from Aston Villa contains no surprises, the fact remains that a threadbare squad has just got smaller.

Thomas Sorensen, Olof Mellberg, PatrikBerger and on-loan Liverpool ‘keeper Scott Carson all left Villa Park for the last time on Thursday, boss Martin O’Neill confirmed.

He said: “Retained lists in my day were really fun and exciting ,but now everyone seems to be aware of retained lists before it ever comes out.

“It didn’t take a massive leap of faith to tell people what was going to happen at the football club.

“Berger was in his final year, Thomas Sorensen was in his final year, as was Olof Mellberg. Scott doesn’t actually belong to us and, to a certain extent, that is out of our hands.”

Mellberg will complete a dream move to Italian giants Juventus, while Carson will return to Anfield to ponder an uncertain future. O’Neill has remained cool over his plans regarding any bid for the England goalie in recent months and much could depend on the Reds’ ongoing swoops for Gareth Barry.

Dane Sorenson has been linked with several clubs, most notably Championship outfit Ipswich, while controversial Berger, who was slammed over recent media remarks by O’Neill, claims Premier League interest.

“Berger has, as he has told the press, got an offer from a Premier League side, but he was going to be leaving at the end of the season anyway,” O’Neill continued.

“Sorensen has got plans, so his agent was telling me, to get his career back on track again.”

Thus, O’Neill remains stuck the the Villans’departures lounge, but will soon need to bolster if he wants a repeat of this season’s top-six finish.
