Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson was left out of the Black Cats’ squad for their last game of the season - the 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal - because he’d reported late for training earlier in the week.
Kieran Richardson, Sunderland’s 23-year-old former Manchester United midfielder, has revealed that he transgressed manager Roy Keane’s hard-line code of conduct and paid the price by being axed from the first-team squad.
But Richardson has no complaints about his treatment.
He told the Sunderland Echo: “I spoke to the gaffer about it and it’s fine. There are no hard feelings.
“I appreciate the decision from him, that’s football. I was there on Sunday supporting the lads.
“They played well against Arsenal, they were unlucky. Now I’ll get ready for next season.
“During the week there was an incident where I was late for training due to my train being late. That’s pretty much the reason why I was left out.
“I expect that of the manager. If you’re not in on time, you don’t get in the squad.
“It’s one of those things. The train was late, there was a crash on the way so I was late, but that’s football. It’s the first time I’ve been late.”
