Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has laughed off speculation Michael Owen is set for a sensational switch to Manchester United in the summer.
According to News of the World, United have made an informal approach to Owen?s representatives regarding a possible move to Old Trafford, but Keegan insisted that it is nothing more than media fantasies running wild.
“Don’t believe all that you have read!” he quipped when a journalist asked him about the validity of the rumours.
Keegan has long warned of the importance of nailing their crown jewel down early in order to preempt the inevitable raids on him this summer, and despite is denial he will be royally peeved to still be in a position that he has to sweat on the future of his most important player.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been a keen admirer of the 29-year-old for many years already, and it is expected that if the Red Devils do make an official approach, they will offer Owen an incentive-based contract that depends on games played and goals scored, providing minimal financial risk should his injury woes return.
