Schalke 04 made a major step toward the Champions League off a win against Hamburger SV, who were also vying for a spot.
WIth his winning goal, Kevin Kuranyi handed Schalke the 1-0 (1-0) win and moved his club significantly closer to the Champions League, which would put an extra 20 million euros in 04's coffers. For Hamburg, the dream of a Champions League spot may just be that. The HSV loss marked their sixth winless match in a row. Kuranyi scored his 15th goal of the season just two minutes into the match.
Match starts with a bang
The host team got off to an unfortunate start at the WM Arena in front of 57,000 fans awaiting the much anticipated match up. In the second minute, defender Thimothee Atouba underestimated the speed of opponent Albert Streit and let the former Frankfurt player blow by him.
Rafael van der Vaart scoring slump continues
Streit caught up to the ball and passed it, where a completely unmarked Kuranyi casually headed in the goal. Hamburg were soon over the shock and could have equalised just two minutes later. Captain Rafael van der Vaart, who hasn't scored since the 19th matchday, shot from close range, only to hit the outside of the net.
