Werder Bremen have suffered a minor set-back in their bid for a place in the Champions League.
A thrilling match saw Werder draw 3-3 at Karlsruher SC. Werder stay second, but Schalke are now level on points.
Diego (23), Mesut Özil (29) and Boubacar Sanogo (87) all scored for Werder. Sebastian Freis (15, 59) with his first-ever Bundesliga brace and Edmond Kapllani (66) with his first of the season replied for the hosts.
Werder were without Torsten Frings, Frank Baumann, Aaron Hunt and Sebastian Boenisch in front of 29,470 fans in the sold out Wildpark, but they still had the better start.
Werder with the better start
Boubacar Sanogo (4) and Ivan Klasnic (6) missed early chances, and Werder were punished immediately.
Freis raced onto Tamas Hajnal's through-ball and fired past Werder keeper Tim Wiese for his seventh of the season.
But Bremen kept up the pressure and turned the tables through Diego and Özil, the latter capitalising on a goalkeeping blunder by KSC keeper Markus Miller.
Dangerous counter-attacks
The hosts were still dangerous on the counter-attack, and Freis equalised from 18 metres after an impressive run from his own half before Kapllani broke his duck from Alexander Iashvili's cross.
Werder looked stunned, but they regained their composure in the dying minutes and were rewarded with Sanogo's late equaliser.
