Derby County’s fate has long been sealed - relegation from the Premier League - but manager Paul Jewell is making plans for next season, and Lee Carsley epitomises the sort of player he wants to bring in.
Everton’s Lee Carsely is the type of player Paul Jewell would like in his Derby County squad next season.
Carsley has been strongly linked with a return to Derby at the end of the season, when his current contract with Everton expires.
Although Jewell has not revealed whether he is interested in signing the 34-year-old Ireland international, who spent the first seven years of his career with Derby, he has identified the player’s character as just the sort he needs at Pride Park.
Jewell is looking for a player in the Carsley mould as he plans to put this abject relegation season behind him by masterminding an immediate return to the Premier League.
“Lee has been one of Everton’s best players this season,” Jewell told the Derby Evening Telegraph.
“I wouldn’t be so silly as to comment on players who are in other manager’s teams at the moment. That would be unfair and unwise.
“I don’t think it’s right for me to say I’m signing Lee Carsley, but certainly that type of player is what we’re looking for, as well as some youth.”
