The much-publicized Heurelho Gomes interview with Voetbal International made the kiosks today. And it?s as bad news as expected for the stunned PSV Eindhoven faithful?
Some quotes had already leaked to other Dutch media and it was understood that the Brazilian international goalkeeper would be hitting out at the club?s managing director Jan Reker once more. He certainly did.
?After I signed that new contract [up to June 30, 2013, on December 13 last year], nothing changed. He convinced me to sign with his promises, but he doesn?t keep them.?
?It?s all Reker?s fault?
?The club promised me a father figure as coach, under whom the youngsters could develop perfectly. Well, that hasn?t come true at all. When they go on like this they will lose a few key players. That is all the fault of Reker, who talks without thinking.?
?The future of PSV depends on the youngsters, but the club has no idea how to handle them.?
Even though they did clinch the Eredivisie title for a fourth straight year, PSV Eindhoven did it under three different bosses: Ronald Koeman, Jan Wouters, prior to and after his appointment an assistant coach, and finally Sef Vergoossen. Huub Stevens is taking over on July 1.
But it is speculated that Gomes has been particularly annoyed by the club?s broken promises concerning the goalkeepers? trainer post. According to the 27-year-old custodian, Reker had promised him last February that PSV Eindhoven would hire Flávio Tenius, thenof Cruzeiro, Gomes? previous club.
The Segers controversy
Tenius is also an old friend of the Brazilian international?s, but Stevens later said he wasn?t aware of any deal to appoint him. Instead, the Dutch giants went on to hire Hans Segers, a former Boeren team-mate of Stevens’.
It was a move which infuriated Gomes. ?Is this normal? Which club works well with two keepers? coaches for its first team? I can think of no good reason why he is here.?
?I personally do not know Segers, but I think this is disrespectful towards me and the other goalkeepers. If they prefer someone different to Flávio than they should say so. They should tell me: ?Heurelho, there are no opportunities for Tenius?. But this all has happened after I extended my contract.?
?It?s him or me?
Tenius has been all but left out of a job and Gomes left no margin for speculation. ?It?s simple: either Reker goes or I do. I can?t co-operate in this way anymore.?
?I don?t like lies. For me one?s word is more important than a signature. I?m done with it. I don?t have confidence in the club anymore as long as it?s led by Reker. He isn?t a man of his word and we can?t possibly work together.?
He did however insist that his priority is to honour his part of the deal with PSV. ?If I wanted a transfer, I would never have signed the new contract. I don?t have to force a transfer by means of an interview.?
?When I signed in December, I wanted to stay with PSV for another five years. But as things stand now, I can?t imagine staying here much longer. I would love to stay in Eindhoven, but not together with Reker.?
Agent talking
Reker had a chance to defend himself, also speaking to Voetbal International. ?Gomes is a fantastic keeper, who?s enormously appreciated at PSV ? and rightly so. However, in his remarks I recognise the tone and attitude of his agent. We will discuss the matter with Heurelho internally.?
Segers was relieved of his Tottenham duties on October 26 last year, immediately after Martin Jol?s sacking. But strangely enough his next appointment could push Gomes towards Hotspur, even though their London rivals Arsenal are reportedly also keen on the towering Brazilian.
