Bielefeld beat Bayer
Struggling Arminia Bielefeld boosted their hopes of survival with a deserved home win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Arminia won 1-0 to leave the drop zone with their second win in 2008. Andre Mijatovic scored the decisive goal with a header (50) before missing an 86th-minute penalty.

Four defeats in five matches

Bayer suffered their fourth defeat in five matches and dropped out of the European spots.

Oliver Kirch had the first real opportunity, but he was denied by Bayer keeper Rene Adler four minutes before half-time.

Five minutes into the second half Arminia were ahead when Mijatiovic scored from Thorben Marx’s free-kick.

It could have been more

The hosts then wasted several opportunities to put the result beyond doubt, with Artur Wichniarek and Mijatovic in particular.

Bayer coach Michael Skibbe took of Manuel Friedrich and threw on Dmitri Bulykin with his last throw of the dice, but Bayer created nothing and lost deservedly.
