Kevin Keegan has insisted that Newcastle should have claimed victory at Portsmouth
The Magpies failed to score at Fratton Park, but also refused to concede, in an encouraging and energetic display that nonetheless resulted in a 0-0 draw.

Michael Owen had arguably the best chance of the match, but his close-range shot was brilliantly stopped by his former Liverpool team-mate David James.

And while Keegan believes his side should have taken all three points, he is pleased to have come away with a draw against the team who trounced Toon 4-1 at St James’ Park back in November.

“We had other chances and probably should have won the way we played,” said Keegan.

“But getting a point here is certainly another good result although both Harry (Redknapp) and I are bound to say it’s two points dropped on chances.”

Exceptional

Keegan was quick to praise James, recognising that the Pompey keeper’s performance may well have been the difference between Newcastle winning or drawing.

And he insists that were it not for the amazing goalscoring form of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres, James would be deservedly named PFA Player of the Year, for which he has been nominated.

“We’ve come up against a really good team with an exceptional goalkeeper who in any other season would be named player of the year for the way he’s performed,” he continued.

“I know he’s been nominated by the football writers for it but if he doesn’t win it they should strike a special award for him. He’s that good.”
