Manchester City and Belgium striker Emile Mpenza has seemingly rejected the chance to resurrect his stalling career in the English Championship, with boss Sven Goran Eriksson inviting the player to “fight” for his place…

Manchester City’s forgotten man, Emile Mpenza, has vowed to stay and fight for his place in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side.

The Belgian hitman is stuck behind a host of quality City strikers in the Eastlands pecking order at present. On Thursday, Leicester City led a number of Championship outfits keen to take him on a deadline-beating loan for the remainder of the season.

However, no move materialised and gaffer Sven Goran Eriksson has challenged the 29-year-old to “fight” for his Premiership future.

“There is nothing there for this moment,” said Eriksson.

“He has had a lot of requests but so far he wants to stay. He is under contract, so it is very much up to him if he wants to stay and fight.”
